Sailing on a Dream

Our dreams keep us happy in our day-to-day life which may not have quite enough color to keep us content. Dreams enrich our spirits to live a full life. This doesn’t mean we can’t take joy in the everyday moments but we seem to be aspiring to fill those moments with something more meaningful than just the task at hand. We want something that keeps us moving ahead with joy. Whether is it to be the best we can be or push ourselves further than we've ever traveled before, it doesn’t matter. We are all sailing ahead on our dreams.

I chose the form of my piano composition Sailing on a Dream to be an expressive stylized waltz. If you have ever watched a sailboat glide through the water from the shore or better yet, been on a sailboat on a day that is just windy enough to fly but not make the water too choppy, you will understand.

Waltzes are perennial favorites to evoke a dreamy floating feeling. Good examples of these are the Sleeping Beauty Waltz and Swan Lake by Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky and The Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss II and of course many others.

When I compose, it still amazes me how the subject comes through the music. I may not be the only one to feel when I'm floating on water or dreams, the music needs to be a waltz.
